Inspiration
The idea for Waste Warriors was inspired by the current state of food wastage around the globe. Many people often throw away “expired” food even if it’s perfectly good to eat, and others simply discard their leftovers when they don't feel like finishing them. Meanwhile, millions of people around the world don't have regular access to food. Furthermore, food wastage costs tons of money and harms the environment by depleting resources and emitting greenhouse gases. By creating Waste Warriors, we hope to raise awareness about food wastage and encourage people of all ages to be mindful of their food! As always, eat more, yeet less!
What it does
Our website educates and raises awareness about food wastage through an interactive game-like structure. Users can play levels, answer trivia questions, think about real-life food scenarios, and ultimately, gain knowledge about food wastage in general.
How we built it
We built our website using HTML, CSS, and JS. After brainstorming and prototyping the layout of our website on Figma, we used Replit to code the intended pages and add everything necessary. Our website has a clean and minimal design, which incorporates CSS to make an overarching "green" theme that reflects greenery, nature, and food too. We used JS to add the interactive aspects of the levels/trivia questions. Overall, the combination of these platforms and languages led to the complete development of Waste Warriors!
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge that we ran into was the lack of team members. We started off as a four-member team, but two members left at the start as they couldn't commit to the project, so we were left with a lot of work on our hands. However, we managed to plan things out efficiently and we were able to finish our project!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that our code has resulted in a beautiful website that can hopefully raise awareness and educate anyone around the world on the issue of food wastage. We're also proud that we were able to add many key elements to our website within a limited time-frame.
What we learned
We learned many great things through this project, such as, teamwork, cooperation, and time management. We also learned non-technical skills, like pre-planning/brainstorming via the prototypes we designed for our website.
What's next for Waste Warriors
In the future, we hope to refine Waste Warriors to have an even more "game-like" structure. We also plan to add more levels to the game. In addition, we hope to add a tracker, so that users can monitor their food wastage habits and work towards eliminating food wastage :)
