Inspiration

I wanted to solve a problem I personally lived through. In high school I never fully locked in, and I got average grades. Looking back, one of the biggest things I lacked was accountability, structure and friendly competition. If me and my friends had a simple way to challenge each other on GPA, fitness, habits or consistency, I know I would have pushed myself more. That idea combined with the popularity of fantasy leagues and platforms like Kalshi inspired me to create a system where people can come together, compete productively and stay motivated.

What it does

Wager turns real-life goals into fantasy style matchups with friends. Users can create challenges for anything: higher GPA by finals week, most gym check-ins, no DoorDash for 30 days. Friends accept, compete and pick stakes such as IOUs, boba, money, or funny punishments like 20 pushups while singing. Verification happens through screenshots, voting or simple check-ins. It brings people together to compete in a fun, structured and motivating way.

How we built it

We built a lightweight webapp with a modular challenge system, a universal IOU engine and real-time result verification. The stack includes a simple backend for challenge data, participant states, and IOUs, along with frontend components focused on fast creation flows and clean challenge cards. We kept the architecture flexible for future integrations such as Canvas, Apple Health, Google Fit and other external data sources that allow automatic challenge verification.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was finding the balance between making competition fun and keeping it safe and positive. We also had to design a verification system that works for subjective and objective outcomes while keeping the flow simple. Building a clean user experience around challenges, stakes and proof submissions was another major design challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a working system where friends can create meaningful challenges and instantly feel motivated. The IOU mechanic adds real stakes and the interface makes competition feel fun without being overwhelming. We also built a flexible backend that can easily expand into fitness, academics or any other personal goals.

What we learned

We learned that friendly competition is one of the strongest motivators for behavior change. We also discovered how important it is to design around minimal friction and fast actions, especially for social apps. Clear structure, simple flows and fun stakes dramatically increase engagement.

What’s next for Wager

We want to integrate external APIs so challenges can be auto-verified through Canvas, Apple Health, Google Fit or calendars. We plan to add group pods, customizable templates and richer IOU systems. Long-term, we aim to make Wager the place where people come together to compete on anything that matters to them and push each other to become better.
