Inspiration
From my journey of raising a son with autism, I’m always wondering if there is any simple and easy way to teach him the power of eye contact for communication. VR for autistic kids is a promising land where technology meets people who can get the maximum benefit from it. I believe that making eye contact and realizing the value of it would be a stepping stone for life-long skills including communication, social interaction, reducing anxiety, behavioral issues.
What it does
It is composed of several features and functions to encourage eye contact while interacting with interesting objects in the VR environment.
- Looking into a puppy’s eyes to get wanted behaviors and rewards
- Generalizing into different kins of puppies when reached goals
- Changing the environment from home, outdoor, school, shopping mall, etc.
- Recording and tracking progress with every gazing in the system
How I built it
Using eye gazing module to simulate eye contact in the VR
Challenges I ran into
Setup development and debugging environment on Mac and Oculus Quest
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Finding a detail feature of Oculus focusing mode.
What I learned
Update SDK for VR development and possibility of applying in healthcare.
What's next for AutismVR
More realistic and generalized VR environment to maximize effective early intervention VR app for anyone who on the autism spectrum disorder.
