Inspiration

Voter turnout is rising, with a notable 12% increase in new voters recently, yet an astonishing 60% of voters remain unfamiliar with their local representatives. Vote Boat was born to bridge this knowledge gap, driven by a vision of empowering citizens with accessible, personalized insights into the politicians shaping their lives. The platform isn’t just about knowing a candidate’s name—it’s about understanding their story, priorities, and how their policies impact our communities.

What it does

Vote Boat provides a seamless, user-friendly experience that brings local and national politicians into focus. The platform offers quick, reliable insights into each candidate’s bio, voting history, policies, health records, and more. Through an easy-to-navigate interface, users can explore candidate profiles, focusing on specific issues, past voting patterns, and policies. Additional links are available for deeper dives, ensuring that all information is readily accessible.

How we built it

Vote Boat was designed with a blend of front-end and back-end technologies to ensure both speed and accessibility. We began with extensive user research to identify gaps in voter education, then aggregated data from local, state, and federal levels, integrating it into a streamlined, intuitive interface. Accessibility was a core design focus, allowing every voter an inclusive, supportive experience.

Challenges we ran into

Building Vote Boat came with its share of challenges. Accessing comprehensive, up-to-date information on local politicians proved to be a hurdle, as did streamlining the data to ensure accuracy without overwhelming users. Additionally, making the platform accessible to a diverse audience required careful design and testing. Ensuring that users feel supported and not overwhelmed by data became a focus as we refined the site.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud to have created a platform that demystifies ballot research, making it easier for voters to engage thoughtfully with their candidates. Vote Boat isn’t merely a data source; it’s an approachable, engaging experience for users at every experience level. We’re especially pleased with the platform’s accessibility features, which empower more voters to navigate the political landscape confidently.

What we learned

This project taught us about the complexities of voter education and the challenges of presenting vast amounts of data in a digestible, user-friendly format. We gained insights into designing for diverse audiences, and we learned how crucial it is to verify and validate political information for reliability. Additionally, starting this project as newcomers to website development and graphic design pushed us to quickly build new skills, from coding basics to visual design principles. Above all, we learned that an informed vote is a powerful vote, and that accessibility is key to making informed voting possible.

What's next for Vote Boat

Our next steps focus on enhancing the speed and performance of Vote Boat, particularly in gathering and displaying real-time data on candidates. By optimizing data retrieval processes and implementing more efficient backend systems, we aim to provide users with faster access to the latest information on their local and national candidates. The planned mobile app will further streamline data access, ensuring that users experience quick, reliable performance wherever they are, making it even easier to stay informed before casting their votes.
