Inspiration
Our team was inspired by the State Farm Good Neighbor challenge along with the superhero theme of the event. We like the concept of gamification, so we decided to implement that with local volunteering tied in with the superhero theme.
What it does
Our website allows users to see a list of available volunteer opportunities in the Athens area and earn "Hero Points" for completing them. These volunteer opportunities' focus on different aspects of need from homelessness, food insecurity, stray animals, veteran aid, to limited educational access. Users have a "Hero Level" that is based on the total number of points they have accumulated from volunteering. In addition, their is a mascot on the right hand side based on the UGA Hacks mascot which users can spend points to accessorize.
How we built it
First making a mock-up on Figma, we took to CSS, HTML, and Python to full stack develop the project.
Challenges we ran into
A large portion of time went into troubleshooting a problem with the internal Python in one of our back-end developer's computers, this caused a large pause in development. Finding out what was rational enough to accomplish within the timespan was also an issue as the realization that we could not accomplish all we wanted brought down morale.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting both the prototype and website active. Managing to incorporate functionality of cards and fun UI.
What we learned
Keeping a realistic pace can make or break the project, knowing your own and your groups limitations is important to make sure there isn't any burnout.
What's next for VoluntHero
The immediate next step for VoluntHero would be creating a charity side of things where verified non-profits can enter the website and enter in their own opportunities. This allows users to have many more listings at their disposal and companies to be incentivized to use the program as well. We could also incorporate a "Friends" section where users would be able to add friends and see their level and recent events. Users would also receive more points for completing tasks together, boosting collaboration and teamwork.
