Inspiration

If I ever see a problem in my community and want to set up an event to help solve the issue, it becomes difficult because it's hard to set up my own volunteering event. Many organizations that offer volunteering restrict it to their own organization and don't allow volunteers to take control. With Volunteer Buddies, volunteers can post their own events, which can solve as help the community as people can find social, environmental, and any other issues and have volunteers help them. This includes invasive species removal, helping the homeless, and many more ideas.

What it does

My site is a place for volunteers to connect while helping the community. Volunteers can both find and post events for others to see. It makes it more accessible than many other volunteer sites which can be very overwhelming or focus only on one organization. Volunteers can also search for events using the search bar.

How we built it

I used HTML for the website structure, CSS for the styling, and Javascript for the posting system, login and sign up as well as the conditions.

Challenges we ran into

The posting system was really difficult as when I created a new event and tried to post it, every time I made a change, the posting system would either glitch or not work at all. Eventually, I was able to fix it by going through the code and debugging it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am really proud of the search bar because it took me a long time to make it work and its functionality is really cool and can really work.

What we learned

I learned a lot about different CSS features and localStorage in Javascript. I also learned about user storage and conditions.

What's next for Volunteer Buddies

Since Volunteer Buddies is only running on localStorage right now, it can’t connect to other users. In the future, I plan on implementing a backend in order to truly connect users. I also want to include more security features in order to verify events. I also want to add a commenting system so users can comment their experiences in the event. I will also be adding a find me system where users can find other volunteers specifically and friend them to connect them for future events.
