Inspiration

COVID-19 is highly contagious two days before and three days after symptoms appear (Alavi et al., 2021).

In these unprecedented times, our family, and friends can be contagious and asymptomatic with COVID-19.

Based on research conducted by Stanford, smartwatch devices can help detect medical complications based on recorded user health data (e.g., heart rate) (Alavi et al., 2021). In lieu of this, our team pulled inspiration from the Stanford study previously mentioned and created Vito.

Vito helps interpret users’ health data while they're asleep (through their smartwatch) and recognizes if the user’s clinical well-being is characteristic of COVID.

What it does

Vito adopts features of an algorithm developed by Stanford which uses heart rate (BPM). While the user is sleeping, the algorithm detects COVID-19 days prior to symptom onset.

Additionally, we further developed the algorithm to include respiratory rate and blood oxygen levels (which are known to change when infected with COVID-19).

How we built it

We built VITO’s app with Swift and SwiftUI. The website/frontend was built with ReactJS, JS, CSS, and HTML, and was hosted on Netlify. The backend was built with Ruby, Ruby on Rails and it was hosted on Heroku.

Challenges we ran into

We initially ran into issues with querying health data from Apple’s Health database. However, with further research we were able to debug and succinctly query the data.

We coordinated our entire team across two different countries and two time zones. The time zone difference and the varying experience level with coding competitions amongst our group members made it challenging but rewarding to collaborate and create a project that aids in health technology amongst users through an easy and reliable metric/way.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have built a fully functional app and full stack website that may aid in detecting COVID-19 days prior to symptoms. Additionally, we are proud to have combined multiple studies to further the COVID-19 detecting algorithm.

What's next for Vito

We plan to collaborate with universities such as the one many of our team members attend and we plan to launch Vito to the App and Play Store. Additionally, we will further refine the algorithm as more research is obtained regarding user health data and detecting niche autonomic signals on the users’ body.
