Inspiration✨
We've all wanted to go experience life, but we want to stay safe because of the pandemic. We scoured the internet for people's thoughts on how COVID-friendly specific places were, but there was no universal website. When we wanted to explore nearby hiking areas, we couldn't find anything on the internet that was recommended by others, allowed safe social distancing practices, and required preventative measures. Hence, VitaQuest was born!
What it does📂
VitaQuest allows people to view ratings on how COVID-friendly places are. Ratings include how often people wear masks, how well they socially distance, and how sanitized the place is. People can browse potential locations, search for their favorites, and upload their own ratings! In addition, people can view the locations on the map with the sorted ratings for each location. This allows people to find nearby establishments while ensuring their safety.
How we built it🖥
We started off with a basic UI, or User Interface, on repl.it. We then added a CSS template from Templated and configured it to work with our website. Using PHP and MySQL, we created a database and then connected it to the HTML and CSS frontend. We added extra features, such as the search feature and the embedded map, then polished the CSS to create a final product!
Challenges we ran into🎯
We ran into many challenges with PHP and MySQL. Integrating PHP and MySQL with HTML and CSS was really complicated, and our code failed many times. This was our first time adding these capabilities and integrating a data base to our project so it was a great learning experience. It took us a long time, but we finally finished and integrated the back-end and front-end seamlessly!
Accomplishments that we're proud of🎯
We're especially proud of developing a working database and integrating PHP and MySQL with the user interface. Our search feature and embedded map are also massive accomplishments, and we're very proud of those features! Lastly, we are proud of utilizing new APIs like the Google Maps and Geolocation APIs to create our project.
What we learned💻
We learned a lot about how PHP and MySQL work, especially when trying to connect them with HTML and CSS. Furthermore, we learned how to embed a map into a website and how to create a search function. We also learned more about the different capabilities of databases.
What's next for VitaQuest📈
In the future, we plan to include a place for people to discuss experiences and create accounts so that users can save their preferences (such as their location and favorite categories). We also want to add a filter to find locations in the same city as the user. We intend to connect to a public domain as well so that other people can access our website!
