Inspiration
Homelessness is a serious socio-economic problem. Many homeless people lack food everyday and some might be unaware of the different organisations that can aid them. Also with the trend of mobile soup kitchens, homeless people might not even known where they distribute. After finding out over 60% of them had mobile phones, the idea of Vitall, a website that aims to be mobile-first was born!
What it does
It provides a centralised (includes all) calendar view of the events (serving breakfast lunch and dinner) that all of the soup kitchens / organisations have organised, including the location and the type of food, so that those who are in need can feel less insecure about not having enough food and are able to find the nearest food distributions. Soup Kitchens can sign up as an organisation and post events such as: Giving out sandwiches on XX street from 10am-11am.
How I built it
Using Django REST as backend and Vue js as frontend. Heroku for deployment.
Challenges I ran into
Using Vue for the second week was challenging and using the v-calendar api and dealing with timezones was frustrating. The authentication was pretty difficult as well.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Using a REST API and incorporating a calendar, and using Vuejs!!
What I learned
Using a full fledged REST API and I have learned much more about HTTP requests! I have also learned more about Vue!
What's next for Vitall
A map feature could be added to show directions. In the future I would add additional features for locating shelters, healthcare etc...
