Inspiration
The inspiration behind our project, VisionAI, was the need to improve accessibility and independence for visually impaired individuals. We recognized the limitations of existing technologies such as GPS and speech-to-text, which primarily focus on navigating long distances and do not provide assistance in navigating immediate surroundings. We wanted to create a platform that utilizes machine learning and computer vision to identify and describe nearby objects, obstacles, and landmarks in real-time, providing visually impaired individuals with greater independence and autonomy.
What it does
VisionAI is a platform that utilizes machine learning and computer vision to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating their surroundings. The platform runs on a smartphone, using the device's camera and other sensors to identify and describe nearby objects, obstacles, and landmarks in real-time. Additionally, VisionAI incorporates a social aspect, allowing users to connect with nearby volunteers who can provide assistance in real-time. The platform also includes a gamification aspect, where users earn points for successfully navigating their environment and compete with others for the highest score. Overall, VisionAI aims to improve accessibility, promote social connection, and enhance the independence and autonomy of visually impaired individuals.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was understanding the technical aspects of the project, such as machine learning and computer vision. We needed to learn new concepts and terminology to effectively communicate with our technical team members and understand the capabilities and limitations of our platform.
Another challenge was ensuring that the platform was accessible and user-friendly for visually impaired individuals. We needed to conduct user testing and gather feedback to ensure that our platform was easy to use and met the needs of visually impaired individuals.
Finally, we needed to ensure that our platform was viable and sustainable from a business perspective. We needed to conduct market research, identify potential funding sources, and create a business plan that aligned with our vision and goals for VisionAI.
Overall, as a non-technical team, we needed to be resourceful and adaptable, learning new skills and collaborating effectively with our technical team members to bring our vision for VisionAI to life.
