Inspiration
Vim is an extremely popular IDE BUT many younger programmers don't know how to use it because of its learning curve.
What it does
VimCat allows users to learn Vim by playing an interactive game where they have to go through each level using Vim shortcuts
How we built it
We used ReactJS to simulate how Vim would act in a text IDE, allowing users to "perform" vim shortcuts, learning their way through manipulating the text.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble with the Vim logic given the short time frame of a mini hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We love the beautiful UI that we've created, as well as making an entertaining environment for an otherwise harsh learning curve.
What we learned
We learned a ton about the interesting quirks and use cases of Vim, as well as some relative experience for future hackathons!
What's next for VimCat
Add more levels, as well as expand to other less well-known tools, such as regex, bash, and git.
