View Don't Even Know: Your one-stop shop for exploring multiple perspectives on current issues.
Inspiration
When it comes to current events, it is common to read one or two articles to get a sense of a topic. However, many readers fail to realize that numerous sources contain inherent biases in their writing. Whether it be through word choice, fact usage, or other means, it is important to get a well-rounded exposure to various articles to filter through the bias.
With View Don't Even Know, our goal is to provide information from numerous perspectives to users. Through this, we hope that users are able to analyze the differences between news reporting and take these into account, and therefore come to their own conclusions about their stance and understanding of a topic.
What it does
View Don't Even Know is a web page that allows a user to input an article that they are reading. When input, the page analyzes the article and searches for similar articles from sources with various biases. It also pulls common information to effective "summarize" the issue at hand accurately.
How I built it
We used node.js, Express, and MongoDB, along with Jade for the front-end web development. Deployed using heroku with a custom domain courtesy of domain.com
Challenges I ran into
Keep on the right task. Development was tough because we kept switching between what we wanted to host the site on, if we should use databases, additional ideas, etc. Sticking to one task was a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Managing to not hospitalize ourselves from the atrocious amount of caffeine we consumed over the weekend.
What I learned
Staying on task is tough. Especially when you're jittered up on caffeine.
What's next for View Don't Even Know
View Don't Even Know... and neither do we. But implementing an algorithm to search through all biases would be a great start.
