Inspiration

The Houston Open Source Society recently lost its host at The Ion. After serving Houston for 30 years we faced an existential crises, we didn't have a place to meet. We need to find a place that was (a) inside of or within 3 miles of 610, that (b) allow a free unincorporated civic organization to use their facilities between 6-9 PM.

What it does

Aggregates Harris County Precinct 1-4, Houston Public Library, Harris County Public Library, and Houston Parks and Recreation meeting centers into OpenStreetMaps, providing an ability to query these facilities geographically, and based on availability.

How we built it

  1. Aggregate the data into a spread sheet.
  2. Enter the data into OpenStreetMaps.
  3. Generate an overpass query to select for meeting places that fit the geographical requirements.
  4. Refine that list with a backend API that can answer queries on availability.
  5. Produce an easily consumed result.

Challenges we ran into

Precincts, libraries, and parks & rec all used different fields and formats - and one operator had no digital reservation method.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Manually entered and QA'd 150 community centers, and libraries into OpenStreetMap.

What we learned

There are two vendors of reservation systems that most municipal resources use.
