Inspiration
Our teammates are all college students who are always busy with school and work. We often forgot what we had in our fridge and bought food we already had. We've also forgotten to throw away old food and let them perish. It is not only bad for our wallets but also for the environment because we are making more waste by forgetting them.
What it does
Our project, Veggie Guard, detects items in a fridge and notifies users when the items are about to expire.
How we built it
Our team uses computer vision to detect images and/or videos of items in a fridge and machine learning with a neural network to identify what these items are. Users can access our program by opening the website we made and logging in using their emails.
Challenges we ran into
Using the live videos required GPU, and most teammates' computers were insufficient. However, we discovered we could use an older program version.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully made a user-friendly website while front-end and back-end teammates cooperated and collaborated. We divided our work wisely so back-end teammates focused on building robust machine learning models, and front-end teammates designed a user-friendly website.
What we learned
We learned about the intersection of computer vision and machine learning.
What's next for Veggie Guard
We will keep thinking of if there is another way to improve the accuracy and speed.
