Inspiration
Hello, my name is Srilokh Karuturi. I have created a use case for Verifiable Credentials for my University. Believe it or not, my university uses an application called “Get Mobile” for us to scan our identification to go to the gym, access printers, etc. I believe that this is a huge security risk. GET mobile having our data in their own database is a liability. If they get hacked, UTD is at blame and all of our data is gone. I believe a better way of Verifying our credentials is using Microsoft’s Decentralized VC’s which live on their own blockchain. This is putting the data/security back to the people who matter the most. The ones who use it!
What it does
This is a simple web app that showcases just how in seconds you can be using Verifiable Credentials in your own use case!
How I built it
Mainly, a week before the Hackathon started I began working on the front end and was simply just reading up on all of the documentation. It was getting to the a point where for my skill level(under grad) that I couldn't build from the ground up. I then took the technology I had the least amount of knowledge on(.NET SAMPLE) and decided to build up from there.
Challenges I ran into
This is probably a Hackathon that is very easy to give up on just because of the big words and not so simple documentation. I think the engineers at Microsoft did try their best but it's hard to come up with a decentralized verifiable credentials without some sort of complications. All the various technologies used include Azure Active Directory Verifiable Credentials, Blob Storage, Key Vault, HTML/CSS, Basic .NET Project., REST API, Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio Community 2022 (to set up Github Action)
- One thing that I wish I accomplished was properly setting up GITHUB actions to run a .NET application. This is why I am not able to deliver on a real site and that can be launched from anywhere. If anyone would reach out to me via devpost, linkedin, email Feel free!!!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- I am extremely proud of coming up with a demo of VC's all by myself and no help.
- Use what feels like 10 different technologies as a beginner!
What's next for UTD Verifiable Credentials Demo
My main goal is to properly figure out how to deploy this demo to a fully working website. Showcase this use case at my University to maybe one day work on implementing!!
