Inspiration

People should be connected to space. We took this at face value.

What it does

The app will ask you a few questions to assess your cosmic planetary match. On a daily basis, the app pushes flirty (but educational) messages from your planet match. Each message is crafted with NASA's public planetary information.

How we built it

A little bit of this (flutter), a little bit of that (nodejs), and some cheery sprinkles (gpt-4o) on top. The backend is hosted on a VPS so that our custom API can be accessed anywhere in the world.

Challenges we ran into

Unfortunately our overall experience with Flutter (our frontend tech) was limited going into this project. Cascades of unforeseen technical challenges towards the end ate up our time. Unfortunately, our frontend and backend were never integrated together due to time constraints. Still, we have something that we’re all proud of.

Producing something real, educational, and a little bit funny as a team.

With a little bit of work, any creative idea can be a reality. No matter how silly.

What's next for URMyWorld

If we were to take this app further, we would implement a more careful planet selection process and real-time data about the positions and velocities of the planets to support seasonally-relevant comments from the planets.

I worked on integration. Tying the front and and back end together, ensuring communication between the two was handled as expected.

Next, I worked on message parsing, caching, and formatting; writing methods to be invoked by the front end to fetch and store the messages so that they could be displayed locally.

Finally, I worked on implementing the quiz feature. I ran into many issues, most of them skill based, and was ultimately unable to complete this feature in time.

My sole focus during the app’s development was in constructing the backend. My 3 main tasks were collecting planetary data for gpt-4o, getting the gpt-4o API connected to the nodejs server, and creating the express-built API that ultimately served the flirtatious comments to our front end.

This was my first time building an app with a team, and it is definitely something I would love to repeat soon. I came in with a silly idea and we left with something that, dare I say, is beautiful.

My main role on this project was developing the front end and coming up with a good design for the pages. as well as how some data would be handled on the app.

As my first hackathon, I had a great experience and got to meet some amazing people.
