Inspiration

When we upgraded to iOS 18, we were appalled to see how much they changed the photos app for the worse. That, combined with the problem I know everyone can relate to in needing more phone storage led us to make Upic. We made this app due to conversations from more than 50 people echoing our problems and saying the competitors in the market were overcharging and under providing for this service that they needed.

What it does

Upic is a sleek, free photo cleaning app tailored towards young adults, where you swipe right to keep and left to delete your photos. Think of it as a tinder for your camera roll.

How we built it

We started this hackathon off with designing in Figma, coming up with the brand identify, core functionality, and design language. We landed on a very simple, playful, Apple-like design with bold gradients to be unique in this market and grab the users attention. We coded this entirely using SwiftUI and some extra UiKit components.

Challenges we ran into

This is Rohan's first time coding, and so we had a lot of learning to go through with that. Additionally, this is only the 4th month of Matt working in Swift. This led us to run into lots of bugs along the process as basically everything we did was something we had not done before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We put in a submission for app store and for test flight multiple hours before the end of the hackathon. Working on something for a problem that we all faced and solving it with a sleek, fun to use solution was something we were very proud of.

What we learned

Speed is king. We are capable of much more than we thought we could accomplish if we give ourselves deadlines. Deeply understanding the customer should be your north star. We learned how to optimize query for 10's of thousands of photos.

What's next for Upic

Pending app store release this week, launching on product hunt and twitter at end of week!
