Inspiration

As university students, we’ve all faced the same fear: “Am I actually ready for the professional world?” The jump from a working with your classmates to a client is intimidating. We often find job applications terrifying because we don’t know if our skills are "enough," what companies are truly looking for, or what the daily grind actually looks like. Hence why, we built Upfolio, the bridge built to close that "Junior Gap." We’ve transformed the stressful experience of applying for jobs into a gamified career journey. Instead of guessing your worth, you follow industry-specific Roadmaps where you gain new skills and earn verified badges. We guide Explorers or Rising Pro, the beginners and intermediates through a transparent path where they can prove their readiness to Visionaries, founders who need reliable, mission-aligned talent. At **Upfolio*, we don’t just host portfolios; we simulate the professional world and verify your transition from student to pro.

What it does

Upfolio is a dual-mode platform that connects aspiring designers with small businesses, startups, and individuals who need affordable, creative design work. Users sign up once and can switch seamlessly between two identities

For students, Upfolio presents opportunities for both real client work and certified upskilling programs recognised by employers, encouraging those with no freelance experience to take the first step towards working professionally. As a designer, you complete structured milestone-based projects generated by our AI Uppy that automatically build your public portfolio as you go. Each project is broken into guided stages with real tasks, including briefs, moodboards, file uploads... etc so even a first-time designer starting from zero has a clear path to completion.

Employers can post a project using a structured scoping tool that covers time commitment, deliverables, revision rounds, and budget. They then review applicants, track milestone progress, leave feedback on submissions, and approve work all from a single project dashboard that shows exactly where designer is and what action you need to take.

How we built it

We set out to move beyond the traditional job board, creating a complete career ecosystem instead. To bring Upfolio to life, we executed a three-stage development strategy:

• Market Research & Inspiration: We analyzed the features of popular platforms. We looked at Upwork for its marketplace reliability, roadmap.sh for its structured learning paths, **Duolingo" for its rewarding gamified experience. By combining the "Earning" of one with the "Learning" of the other, we found our unique solution.

• User Journey Mapping: Before designing a single screen, we mapped out detailed user journeys for the Explorer, the Rising Pro and the Visionary. We focused on the psychological shift from intimidated student to confident professional, ensuring every touchpoint felt like a milestone.

• Prototyping in Figma: We brought the Upfolio world to life using Figma. We developed a high-fidelity prototype with the give colour palette and typography. This allowed us to test the fluid transitions between the roadmap views, the simulation alerts, and the dashboard toggles, ensuring the gamified feel stayed polished and professional.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest hurdle was defining the Verification Logic; we refused to let our badges feel like just digital stickers, instead engineering a system where every milestone represents an AI-audited, professional standard. Balancing this gamified experience was a complicated, as we aim to keep the interface rewarding and fun without losing the high-stakes professionalism required for a career platform. With a surplus of innovation within the team, our final challenge was disciplined curation, navigating tight time constraints by stripping away secondary features to ensure our core solution remained concise, powerful, and ready for launch.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of Uppy. Creating an AI mentor that feels like a peer rather than a judge was a huge win. We also successfully created a unified design system that feels cohesive across two very different user experiences The Explorer Hub vs. The Visionary Suite. Finally, seeing the Client Simulation flow come to life, turning a stressful concept into an exciting experience was something that is really satisfying.

What we learned

We learned that Trust is the ultimate currency. A portfolio doesn't get you hired; the certainty that you can do the job does. Your personalities are what the hiring manager are looking for, "Are you willing to learn and can you actually get the job done?". Commitment is the key to success. We also learned how to scale a design system quickly under pressure.

What's next for Upfolio by BLITZY

The roadmap for Upfolio is just beginning. We plan to:

• Expand the Roadmaps: Add tracks for Motion Design, 3D Art, and Creative Coding.

• Community Sprints: Live, timed challenges where Explorers can compete for "Legendary" badges.

• The Visionary Radar: A predictive AI tool that suggests the perfect designer to a founder before they even finish typing their brief.
