Inspiration

The inspiration for our project stemmed from the challenges many new and current students face in navigating the overwhelming number of events and opportunities available on campus. While social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram offer access to individual clubs, they often miss the bigger picture of campus-wide events. We wanted to create a centralized platform that categorizes events by faculty and provides up-to-date information, making it easier for students to connect with relevant opportunities and feel integrated into university life.

What it does

Our app, UniN, consolidates campus event information from various clubs into a single, organized platform. It categorizes events by faculty and provides real-time updates, making it easy for students to stay engaged and connected. UniN helps students find events relevant to their interests, fostering a sense of community by making it easier for international students and newcomers to immerse themselves in campus life, and for current students to expand their networks.

How we built it

We began by identifying the key challenges students face in discovering and engaging with campus events. Through surveys, we gained a deep understanding of these pain points, which helped us finalize the app concept. The design phase focused on creating a user-friendly interface. Using Flutter, we developed the app for iOS, which allowed us to build a high-performance app. For backend services, we utilized Firebase to handle user authentication, real-time database updates, and cloud storage. This combination ensured that our app was both efficient and secure. Throughout development, we incorporated iterative testing and user feedback to refine the app.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was mastering Flutter, as it was our first experience with this framework. We had to dedicate significant time to researching best practices, exploring the documentation, and experimenting with various features. Additionally, integrating Firebase presented its own set of challenges, particularly in ensuring smooth data handling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of successfully building a functional and user-friendly app that meets the needs of our target audience. Despite the steep learning curve, we managed to create a polished product that consolidates campus events in an innovative way. We're also proud of our teamwork, which allowed us to overcome obstacles and deliver a cohesive solution.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned a great deal about app development, especially using Flutter and Firebase. We gained valuable insights into user-centered design, ensuring that the app not only functions well but is also easy to navigate.

What's next for UniN

Moving forward, we plan to expand the app's functionality by integrating more advanced features such as personalized event recommendations based on user preferences.
