Inspiration
A part of the challenge that we are relieving is making sure that Ukrainians and other people within the country (Immigrants and Students) receive accurate information from the news. There are several biased news outlets that don't always fact-check the information and images that they put on the media. This can be very dangerous, especially for refugees that need information about shelter or refuge quickly. (Humanitarian Aid - Microsoft Track)
What it does
Looks up any news article and gives a disclaimer deciding if the new media outlet contains media bias or not.
How we built it
We built is using the google chrome extension tutorial for developers. Implemented it with HTML/CSS and JavaScript for the code, and designed the layout of our project with Adobe XD.
Challenges we ran into
We were unable to fully implement the algorithm to read the URLs of the news media outlets to determine if the source contained media bias based on our predetermined list of outlets that have low to medium-high media bias. (AllSlides, 2021) https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-chart
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although it was difficult to implement the functionality of the project, we are proud of the mockups we created and the concept of this project that focuses on the safety of people affected in Ukraine.
What we learned
We learned more about the situation in Ukraine and how to create a google chrome extension.
What's next for Unbiased
To finish the implementation on fetching the URL to decide if the URL attached to the news media outlet contains bias or not. Also, we make sure to make all HTML/CSS & JavaScript files available on GitHUB at a later date by the end of this month (Mar 2022). After doing this, the project will be complete and will be available for download on our GitHub repo. In addition, we were thinking of adding a search bar and/or Microsoft Azure Translate API feature, but since this is open source code you are more than welcome to modify this project to improve it!
