Inspiration
Throughout the pandemic, many of our peers have struggled to focus and stay on track during distance learning. We aimed to create a website that provides students with tools to stay focused and productive.
What it does
The Ultimate Study Site is a website with a Pomodoro-style timer, and a to-do list. The home page has a fun and customizable theme. There is a to-do list, in which the user is able to input their tasks and mark them as completed, as well as save the list for future use when navigating the website. The Pomodoro timer has many different customizable options to fit the user's needs, and has various sound effects as well.
How we built it
We built our website on replit.com, using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
We were all beginners at coding, so we had to experiment with the code in order to reach the desired outcome. We had to go through trial-and-error many times because the product was not turning out to what we wanted initially, and we experienced many formatting issues as well. We were also consistently teaching ourselves new things with the use of the internet, so it was a challenging learning process for all of us since this was done in a short timespan with little prior knowledge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of our parallax and customizable interface on the homepage, because we did not expect to have been able to bring a lot of our more ambitious ideas to life. We are also proud of the way the timer works, especially with the sound effects because we customized those a lot. We are very proud of the website's overall aesthetic, and the challenges we were able to overcome, especially as beginners to hacking.
What we learned
We expanded our initially little knowledge on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript by a lot, because we did a lot of research on the languages during the hackathon's timeframe. We also learned a lot about teamwork, as working in a team presented its own challenges in a virtual environment. We were luckily able to support one another and communicate well during the hackathon, and we each promoted one another's understanding of programming overall.
What's next for Ultimate Study Site
Some ideas we have for the future include integrating an academic resources page, with a voting system in order to find what's most relevant and helpful to the user. We hope to create our own domain and host the website independently. We plan to promote the Ultimate Study Site to many of our peers, in order to help them with their productivity as well!
