Inspiration
Music has the power to heal, especially for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and mental health conditions. Studies show that listening to familiar songs can trigger memories, reduce stress, and improve cognitive function. MedElly was inspired by the idea of using personalized music therapy to help individuals reclaim their memories and well-being.
What it does
MedElly is a music therapy platform that uses frequency-based audio therapy to support memory recall, relaxation, and emotional well-being. It allows users to:
- Listen to curated playlists tailored for conditions like dementia, anxiety, and sleep improvement.
- Explore therapeutic frequencies such as 432Hz & 522Hz for stress relief.
- Enjoy a seamless music experience with a Next.js web app that integrates Web Audio API for real-time audio visualization.
How we built it
MedElly was developed using:
- Next.js & TypeScript for the front-end.
- Auth0 for secure user authentication.
- Howler.js & Web Audio API for advanced audio control and visualizations.
- MongoDB Atlas for storing and managing curated song data.
- HPCC Systems & ECL for large-scale data processing of song recommendations.
Challenges we ran into
- Web Audio API Integration – Managing real-time audio visualizations while keeping playback smooth.
- Database Optimization – Filtering millions of songs to find relevant tracks from the 1950s-1990s.
- Authentication Setup – Ensuring a seamless login/logout experience with Auth0.
- GitHub Limitations – Handling large audio files without exceeding repo size constraints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
✅ Successfully built a functional music therapy web app with real-time audio visualization.
✅ Implemented frequency-based therapy using curated healing soundtracks.
✅ Overcame GitHub storage issues and optimized the song dataset efficiently.
✅ Created a user-friendly interface that is accessible to individuals of all ages.
