Inspiration

As students, budgeting is an essential skill for planning for the future and developing responsibility as one ventures into the real world. Despite the importance of managing one’s personal finances, students often get lost in the hassle of keeping track of one’s bills and spending and forego budgeting altogether.

Therefore, we wanted to create a solution for this problem by creating a budgeting calculator for students and people who are beginning their journey of managing their finances.

What it does

ufinance is a financial budget calculator built for students who are getting started with managing their finances. You can add new transactions, insert the amount and select a category such as grocery, retail, entertainment, etc. The app stores your transaction history as well as showing your current balance, total income and expenses. It also shows your expenses by category so you can track where you are spending the most of your money.

How I built it

We used a react framework to create the web app which we coded in javascript and CSS3 and HTML5.

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges that we faced as a team was organizing our tasks and learning to efficiently work together to complete our project. We came to the realization that clear communication was the most effective solution to this challenge.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud to have designed an app that addresses a relevant need amongst students in today’s society. As students, we really struggled with budgeting and organizing our finances and the fact that we were able to design and create a fully-functioning solution to our problem using the knowledge and skills we have learned throughout the years, was a really rewarding experience.

What I learned

We were really fortunate to have had the opportunity during this hackathon to have learned how to code in javascript, HTML5, and CSS3 in React. We were also able to learn new concepts such as React hooks (state, effect) and implement them within our projects.

What's next for ufinance?

In the future, we would like to expand ufinance to include more financial resources for students and individuals that are interested in beginning their journey into finance. We would also really like to explore the addition of investment tools and resources for individuals who are interested in trading and stocks.
