Inspiration

I was inspired to make this because of my freshman year experience where none of my friends had any idea that Kilwins had a student discount, CW was free the entire time, Restaurants in the city have student discounts, and much more. I still see it today with even seniors. No app or website I found accomplished what I am trying to do.

What it does

It is a forum meant to organize information that students can post within one go-to app. It organizes information by tags that are relevant to what students are searching for, by the location of the event or place people are posting about, and creates a social media feed in case you just want to scroll through recent new information. It will make it 10x easier for TWAMPS to find out interesting and helpful things in and out of the campus.

How we built it

I built is from scratch using front-end coding on ReactJS and expo Go to simulate it on my iphone. I also used flask to build a back-end with python.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into the big challenge of just starting. I had no idea how back and front-end worked as well as how to connect them. I never even thought about making an app until I heard my girlfriend complain about not knowing about fun places around her. I had to work through many implementation issues that connected javascript to python.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of the fact that I made a working interface that genuinely looks like the start of a forum or social media app. I can see the future of this app being used by TWAMPS to avoid the pesky multi-media searching of information.

What we learned

I learned how javascript works in terms of front-end developing and graphical design. I also learned how much more difficult it is to connect a back-end without having a pretty solid start on a front-end. Most of all, I learned about time management. Boy oh boy.

What's next for Twamp Swamp Guide

PITCH IT TO W&M! Not in it's current state, but I would love to see its possibilities in the future as I gain more knowledge in constructing apps like this. I would also like to make it accessible outside a testing environment so others could try it.
