Inspiration
Everyday, millions of individuals around the world rely on multinational, media conglomerates to provide them with reliable updates of current events. We as the people trust we are being given non bias news that helps us develop our own opinions and views about the given topic, but to what degree should we trust these sources? TrustYourSources was designed to help bring knowledge to the people and to see if topics in the news share the same sentiments as real people on social media.
What it does
TrustYourSources lets you search up current topics and compare the sentiment of the topic in the media vs. how social media feels about it. Since we all know the media is never un-biased, TrustYourSources was designed in order to help you as an individual learn if certain media sources create articles that agree or oppose with the general public. See trending topics in the news or trending topics in social media, or search up your own keywords! Filter results by social media apps and/or media sources to get a comprehensive understanding of how certain apps or media companies differ!
How we built it
We built this project using React, Node.js, Express and Co:here API solutions. The planning of this project was done on Figma.
Challenges we ran into
Having never used Co:here prior to this project as well as having limited API knowledge was challenging when trying to integrate these premade solutions. As well, we had issues through the project connecting our front-end to our backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud and passionate about our concept and think that we have attempted to tackle a very important issue.
What we learned
We learned that software design is very important when planning a large project to get a good sense of the tasks ahead
What's next for TrustYourSources
Social Media We would like to integrate a Reddit API and Instagram API News Outlets Being able to perform searches in different languages will lead to inclusivity of Trust Your Sources. We would also like to be able to see an analysis of the News source and their reporting history. Additionally we wish to implement a filter results for news sources (ex. Fox news only).
