Inspiration

We believe that data is the fuel of tomorrow. Self-driving cars will feed on data to evaluate safe and fast routes. Public organisations like the police or red cross will know how to access an accident area quickly. Drivers will be alerted when they get tired and logistics centers will know when to schedule an appointment in the truck garage in advance. We see the potential that MAN becomes the next big data provider for the road. For this to happen, we believe that it is necessary to develop a data ecosystem, which gives MAN, the driver, the logistics center and public organisations control over their data.

What it does

It simulates some data generated by a truck. Data packages are send to the cloud systems to which they belong. Driver data is also send in real time to the iPhone and Apple Watch apps which make some cool use of it. For example, if the truck driver exceeds the speed limit, or she/he must take a break, the app give him a notification like a vibration to the wrist.

Give data control to the participants. Give (paid) access to the data API for third-party companies. Give real-time haptic feedback for bus and truck drivers with the Apple Watch.

How we built it

With hard work!

We divided the project in differents tasks based on our personal interest: Nico and Kaspar built the app for the iphone and apple watch. Gioele built the truck accelerator simulation and the path drawing on Google Maps. Stephanie built the backend and the the data package visualization.

We use the Google Maps API to simulate the travel of a truck. Firebase Cloud Messaging send push messages to an iPhone and a Apple Watch.

The backend works with Play Framework and the Frontend with Javascript and HTML.

Challenges we ran into

Apple Watch is what gave us more struggle.

The Free Account for Google Maps API allows “only” 2500 requests per day. We had to implement a strategy so that our simulations didn’t generate too many requests during our tests.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Both the apps (iPhone & Apple Watch) receive real time data via Firebase! Our Demo is working, and that’s enough to be proud of, isn’t it? Also, we have a great concept for how to built a secure and efficient data ecosystem in reality, build with Digital ID (https://www.digitalid.net).

What we learned

Firebase Cloud Messaging Google Maps API Build iOS & Apple Watch apps Some cool Javascript and CSS Stuff (Animations, Audio Files)

What's next for Trucker

It should be brought to the next level.

Real Data will be used and saved in decentralized databases using DigitalID (https://www.digitalid.net).
