Feeling vulnerable or anxious? With Tribe Check, you can schedule check-ins and ensure that someone gets alerted if you don’t respond. No phone number, no email, no tracking — just proactive safety without paranoia.
Inspiration
Imagine something happens to you. How long would it take before someone starts to worry? My grandmother losing her independence, my senior dog relying on me, my friend suffering from addiction and my sister visiting homes as a nurse... I realized we needed a way to plan ahead and know our loved ones would get useful information to assist us in case something happens and we are unable to call for help.
What it does
- You schedule a checkin.
- The app sends you a checkin notification.
- If you answer “all is good”, nothing happens and the checkin is archived.
- If you don’t answer or ask for help, your loved ones are alerted with useful information (battery level, geolocation if you decided to share it, a personal message you prepared.)
Why it is different
Tribe Check is unique because it works in a proactive way and asks for help when you are not capable of doing it yourself. For example if you are unconscious, lost your memory, are attacked, threatened or physically or mentally impaired.
What also makes Tribe Check unique is its anonymity and personal data protection. No email or phone number stored: you create an account with a pseudo and password. To add to that, user-generated content like personal messages and geolocation are also encrypted. So it cannot be used to track or harass you.
Who it is for
👩 Women looking for personal safety 🏡 Field professionals like real estate agents and nurses 🐾 Pet owners worried about their furry friends ❤️ Caregivers monitoring loved ones 👥 Vulnerable people who want extra peace of mind
How I built it
As a UX designer, I started learning to code mobile apps with Flutter for and during this project. The beginnings were challenging, but now I can turn my ideas into products and make them available to users. Tribe Check is now available on the Play and App stores for Android and iOS.
Challenges I ran into
Besides learning to code with Flutter, app signing and publication process on the stores has been my biggest challenge. Recruiting beta testers and collecting feedbacks was also time-consuming and demanding.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am extremely proud of having learned to code and crafting Tribe Check all by myself! Getting user feedbacks and speaking about the app at conferences is a great pride.
What's next for Tribe Check
Many items in the backlog, including recurring checkins, AI, well-being, etc. But first focus on getting my first 1000 users and their feedbacks to improve. Thanks!
