Inspiration
Our goal in creating this is to call attention to deforestation. We all know the ways in which climate change impacts us all of a broad societal level, but we wanted to emphasize how challenging it is to fight deforestation on a local level. The user's goal is to, in spite of challenges, maintain a biodiverse forest. We hope that this game inspires people to see the difficultly communities, especially Indigenous communities, face in maintaining the forests that all of us depend on.
What it does
In this game, the player's objective is to try to maintain biodiversity on the 30 plots of land in a forest they manage.
How we built it
The game was built using C-Sharp through the Unity game engine. The art was made through a combination of a pixel art program and Sketchbook.
Challenges we ran into
There was difficulty in managing mouse interactive systems as well as reasonable variable and function storage. Additionally, creating a game's worth of art on a significant time crunch was challenging, and may have degraded the overall presentation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully functional game, complete with custom animation and graphics, in the course of a day.
What we learned
Over the course of this project, we learned how to use and scale pixel art in png form, how to design and work with cohesive color palettes. We also extensively implemented Scriptable Objects in Unity, which was a new concept to explore.
What's next for Tree
Tree could turn out to be a production release on the Steam Platform. But before that we need to polish the user experience and some more definition to the graphics of the game.
