💡🌟Inspiration💡🌟
Sustainable travel is the future, and there's no doubt about it. As the world moves towards a more environmentally friendly and renewable future, the trend of ecotourism is continuing to grow exponentially. So, what exactly is ecotourism? Ecotourism is a form of travel that aims to support the wildlife and environment of the destination country. As avid travelers, we have recognized the need of a way for tourists to educate themselves on sustainable travel, and find places with exceptional ecotourism infrastructure. As a result, we chose to develop TravEuro. TravEuro highlights 5 countries in Europe, that we handpicked, where tourists can visit and enjoy the nature responsibly. By encouraging eco-friendly practices, supporting local economies, and raising awareness about sustainable tourism, we aim to inspire others to explore the world responsibly. Our website is a platform for sharing insights, tips, and resources to help travelers make informed choices that benefit both the environment and the people they visit.
🤔⚡What it does🤔⚡
TravEuro is a powerful website that helps assist tourists sustainably travel within 5 countries in Europe with notable ecotourism infrastructure; Germany, Sweden, Spain, Greece, and the Netherlands. Once you sign into our website, you are greeted by captivating visuals and have the ability to scroll through the flags of the five aforementioned countries. Clicking on a flag will take you on an interactive tour of a sustainable city within that respective country, providing you with insight on how you can explore Europe responsibly. If you wish to view personal accounts of sustainable travelers of a specific country, simply go to that country's flag and click on the "EcoAccounts" tab. This will introduce you to two eco-friendly tourists who have traveled to your chosen country. Clicking on the marker icons will give you access to five eco-friendly destinations per country, giving you a total of 25 eco-destinations in Europe to explore.
🏗️⚒️ How we built it🏗️⚒️
Our team utilized Visual Studio Code in order to collaborate and work together on our project. Our website was crafted using three coding languages: HTML, CSS, and JS. In order to implement an interactive map, we used Mapbox and OpenStreetMap. The site was designed with a user-centric approach, ensuring seamless navigation and accessibility. We leveraged Firebase for robust authentication and real-time database management. Extensive research was put into creating the "EcoAccounts" section, and choosing the "eco destinations" for our interactive map. Finally, we used Discord in order to collaborate with one another and discuss our progress.
💪🏋️♂️Challenges we ran into 💪🏋️♂️
Our team is a group of beginner coders who learned the ins and outs of web development while coding this project! This is our first serious project and our first hackathon, so it was quite challenging figuring everything out. Prior to signing up for the hackathon, we all took preliminary courses on HTML, CSS and JS. Learning and implementing Firebase for authentication and database management also posed a steep learning curve, but it was essential for providing users with a secure and seamless experience. Finally, sourcing reliable and up-to-date information on sustainable practices and destinations was quite difficult as we had to do a lot of research. Ensuring that the content was not only accurate but also engaging and informative was crucial to the success of the site.
💯😎Accomplishments that we're proud of💯😎
Honestly, we are extremely proud of how hard we worked over these last two days and the amount of effort we put into this project. Despite the barrier we faced as new developers, we created a user-friendly interface for eco-tourists to learn more about ecotourism. Our interactive world map, showcasing eco-friendly destinations, stands out as a significant accomplishment. The integration of geospatial data and mapping APIs required in-depth learning and precision, but the end result is a dynamic feature that allows users to explore sustainable destinations worldwide. We are also proud of the comprehensive and accurate information we provide about sustainable practices and destinations. Our thorough research and commitment to reliable sources have resulted in content that is not only informative but also engaging and inspiring for our users.
📚✏️What we learned📚✏️
Through this project, we learned the basis of web development and how to ensure that the user is able to successfully navigate your website. We learned how to debug, test, and improve our web features. Due to the fact that this is our first hackathon and first true exposure to the coding community, we had a lot on our plate. We had to learn how to utilize GitHub, Visual Studio Code, map APIs, and multiple other features that were quite confusing for us. Overall, this project has been a transformative journey, equipping us with technical skills, design acumen, and a greater appreciation for sustainability, all of which will be invaluable in our future endeavors.
⏭️‼️ What's next for Traveuro⏭️‼️
We hope to improve our website and optimize it for users. We want to make it more smooth and improve some features, so we are able to release our website to the public one day. We also want to incorporate AI into our website. Our tentative AI will help users find sustainable travel habits and assist them in finding ecotourist destinations that suit to their individual needs. The journey ahead is filled with opportunities for growth and innovation, and we are excited to expand our knowledge on web development and improve our presence in the coding community.
