Inspiration
Oftentimes people want to travel but with everyone so busy, it can be hard to find someone who is able to share the experience. Issues that come up can range from different schedules, no travel savings, and simply not knowing anyone who wants to travel with you. When thinking of the theme of travel, I thought of a senior trip I planned on going on with friends, but no one saved up except me. To my dismay, I didn't end up going because I didn’t want to go on a trip alone. So, what better than a travel friend finder! Find other people's travel itineraries that worked for them, and find a like minded soul that wishes to see the world with another. No more putting off travel plans due to not having anyone to travel with! It’s time to go! Go make a new friend and explore!
What it does
Travel Tender is a site for like minded individuals to find their next adventure and a friend to share the journey with! Users will be prompted to put in their login information, and then directed to fill out a questionnaire. They can log where they want to go, how long they want to be traveling, and what type of activities they're looking forward to. The website will then match the user with their perfect pair under the criteria of places they want to visit, travel times, and other common similarities. After matching, the users will be allowed to chat and see if they want to find or create a trip itinerary to do together.
How we built it
Travel Tender’s frontend was designed & prototyped in Figma, and then made in HTML, CSS, and JAVASCRIPT. We used PYTHON, FLASK, and MYSQL for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge we had was making the cookies updated to the database which was very important because it connected the user with their data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We take pride in how far we were able to advance. As a team of Freshmen submitting their first hackathon project, we struggled to finish it all in the time limit. We have reached a significant milestone, and we will build on this success to make even greater achievements. These projects had many increments that required the highest amount of concentration. Even though we all have different experience levels, we were able to compliment each other and have made up for each other’s weaknesses. The increased use of Flask, website development, and HTML helped us become more proficient in these programming skills. We were able to learn new things while making this project, and that alone is a huge accomplishment.
What we learned
We learned how to use Flask, hosting databases, and connecting frontend to backend through the use of connectors. We also learned to be flexible with our project and collaborating with other programmers.
What's next for Travel Tender
We want to implement our own chat room and finish the matching features. In the future, we hope to integrate Google Travel APIs to recommend hotels and restaurants based on the user’s preference.
