Inspiration
Walking through the streets of Southampton, trash is everywhere from the streets where we trek to university every day to our lecture halls where we utilise our brains to gain an education. This inspired us to help kickstart a way that users can clean our environment as well as being rewarded for doing so.
What it does
Our app shows an interactive map (with the use of the Google Maps API) with bin markers, which contain information about how full a bin is. A user can scan the barcode of their trash, before they put it in the bin, to earn points which can later be given in for shop voucher rewards.
How we built it
We used Android Studio for the front-end development - something which the entire front-end team had to learn and become accustomed to. The back-end dev team used Python to create a web server and handle passing images to the API.
Challenges we ran into
Having never used Android Studio, we had to become accustomed to it and learn how to use it. We found a significant challenge to be taking a photo using the phone's camera and then sending that image to the back-end without it being compressed too much.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating such a unique app from the bottom up and having it be a working product as well. Working through the long night and through constant errors, having a vision turn into a reality is always a proud moment and us as a group are very proud of our app.
What we learned
Though different levels of challenges may arise when creating a project like this, hard work will lead to a project that we are proud of.
What's next for Trash And Go
We want to gain customer research to see how the application deals with the community and then start implementing the app smoothly into daily use for everyday users.
