Inspiration

The need for this tool was born out of field research done for the European migrant crisis, where field workers lacked a ready way to provide instructions in a foreign language, which Translation Cards seeks to address.

What it does

Translation Cards is an in-development tool designed to make it easy for those communicating with someone who speaks another language, providing ready access to pre-recorded translated content just by tapping a card on the screen. This app comes with an initial set of translated and recorded content, oriented towards the medical field. As a user of Translation Cards, you’re also able record their own translations for additional words and phrases.

How we built it

We worked closely with the UNHCR Innovation Lab, and they gave us a lot of great feedback early on from fieldwork in Macedonia. Since we're a distributed team, we relied on the GitHub issue tracker, Slack, and regular VC check-ins to stay connected. To help onboard new contributors today, we worked in pairs so people could get up and running quickly and close bugs. Since reliability is important, we make sure to spend time on both manual and automated testing, and we used Snap CI to keep track of build status and test failures.

What's next for Translation Cards

We want to make translations more flexible and context-dependent (e.g., depending on the gender of the person you're speaking to).
