Inspiration
We are inspired by how people around the world are using various social media platforms to stay connected in the Covid-19 era, and we hope to create a social media app that is more targeted at people who love travelling and sharing.
What it does
TrailBlazers allows users to post travel related picture and tag their posts with labels such as ‘History’, ‘Food’, ‘Scenery’, etc. The main feature of TrailBlazers is that users gain experience points by completing missions such as ‘Share a food post’ or ‘Post 5 days in a row’, or ‘Make your first overseas post'. Users level-up once their experience point reaches a certain amount. Their experience points, levels of achievements and progress of their missions completed will be displayed in their profile page.
How we built it
We built the frontend user interface with React Native and Android Studio, and integrate the backend using Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
Determined to create a mobile application, we went ahead with using React Native even though we were not familiar with the syntax and functionalities. We believe that TrailBlazer has to be an app instead of a website in order for users to use it constantly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our gamified system. In addition to the conventional 'likes and comments' of a social media app, each user has their own experience points and achievement levels. We believe this novel idea serves as a strong incentive for people to continue using the app.
What we learned
We learned to help each other while creating the app using tech stacks that we were not familiar with, and also communicating our ideas properly to ensure smooth integration of the various features.
What's next for TrailBlazers
We hope to implement more features within the gamified system, such as number of flags collected, badges such as 'foodie', etc.
