Inspiration
Last year we tried doing individual research on carbon dioxide reduction but due to difficulty finding correct resources ad trouble connecting with other experiences researchers we were unable to pursue our research. This motivated us to develop Toshokan. A database that will help connect individual researchers to other researchers and can also provide companies and organizations potential interns. It can also help organizations to connect with other researchers working on the projects they are interested in and those organizations can fund those researchers.
Our main purpose was to create better collaboration in the scientific and research world. We felt the lack of collaboration last year in our personal experience and this was a big motivation for Toshokan. Better collaboration and connection in the scientific world will improve innovation and will fasten the progress of Humanity as we all will learn from each other's research.
What it does
Toshokan allows users to enter their field of interest like "Lung Cancer" and enter the state they are interested to look researchers in. When users enter submit, Toshokan will filter results and provide them with information related to different researchers from different universities working on their field of interest. It also provides different clubs/organizations in universities related to that field of interest. This will help high schoolers in looking for organizations they might wanna join in their dream or expected colleges. Toshokan will also help high schoolers in their college apps as they can search for different professors and their projects which they might be interested in when they go to college.
-p.s. due to time limitations our prototype database is limited to Lung Cancer research in NJ state. We intend to add more information in this database over time.
How I built it
We used Simbla website & database builder to build this website. With the search bar you could enter Lung Cancer with NJ as state and it will link you to the page with Clubs and Researchers related to Lung cancer in NJ. This portrays the working of the website.
Challenges I ran into
-Publishing the home page
- Working of the search bar
- UI of the website -Connecting pages to the website
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
-A working model of Toshokan, even though with very limited database it is something we worked on all day. The User Interface came out satisfactory and took a long time to develop which we are proud of.
What I learned
-Building websites through a web builder -working in a team on a website -connecting pages to the home page.
- Developing a overall UI for a website
What's next for Toshokan
- We will put more data in the database.
- better search quality -better user interface -login page -allowing users to add to the data base and add their achievements.
