Inspiration
Climate change is intensifying weather patterns, making tornadoes more severe and unpredictable. Our goal with Tornado Hound was to harness technology to better predict these events, providing communities and meteorologists with advanced warning to safeguard lives and property.
What it does
Tornado Hound is an AI-powered web application that delivers real-time tornado predictions with enhanced accuracy. Utilizing deep learning, it offers early warnings and acts as an essential tool for meteorologists and every day people, improving the rapid dissemination of life-saving information.
How we built it
Leveraging Next.js for our responsive web interface and the VGG16 model with Keras for deep learning, we trained our system on Google Cloud's robust computational resources. This combination provided us the scalability to process vast datasets efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
Collaborating as a group of four, each with our own ideas and specialties, was as rewarding as it was challenging. We had to learn to communicate effectively and merge diverse approaches into a singular vision. The steep learning curve of new technologies, especially the integration of AI with Next.JS and the nuances of cloud-based model training, posed significant hurdles. However, these challenges pushed us to grow and learn as a team.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In a condensed timeframe, we tackled and mastered unfamiliar technologies, a testament to our team's adaptability and commitment. The fusion of AI and web development was a challenge we met head-on, leading to the creation of a platform that not only predicts tornadoes but educates on safety practices.
What we learned
This project deepened our understanding of AI's potential in disaster management and the nuances of meteorological data. We learned the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and agile development in addressing climate-related challenges.
What's next for Tornado Hound
Our vision for Tornado Hound extends beyond its current capabilities. We aim to enhance its predictive horizon, offering forecasts that are further out in time. Additionally, we're exploring the possibility of predicting other extreme weather events, which could significantly benefit regions like Bangladesh where such forecasts are crucial. Integrating with global emergency systems, Tornado Hound could set a new bar for weather prediction technology worldwide.
