Inspiration
Toasters was inspired by the realization that newcomers to outdoor activities and the Arc'teryx brand often face daunting challenges. Many hesitate to seek guidance in-store, fearing intimidation. This hesitation can lead to suboptimal gear choices and a less-than-ideal outdoor experience. Toasters aims to break down these barriers by providing a platform for customers to express gratitude for the guidance of Arc'teryx employees. The idea of using toasts was inspired by the phrase "propose a toast," which conveys celebration of health and happiness of a person. This resonated with our mission to create a platform that honors the positive experiences and valuable guidance exchanged within the Arc'teryx community, and empowers newcomers to embrace their outdoor journey with confidence, knowing they have a supportive community behind them.
What it does
Toasters serves as a platform for customers to express gratitude and appreciation for the guidance provided by Arc'teryx employees. It is designed to have QR codes displayed in Arc'teryx retail stores near checkout areas and exits, inviting customers to leave a toast if they received recognizable guidance or assistance from any employee (the toastee). Upon scanning the QR code, customers are directed to the Toasters website where they can easily post a note of thanks. Additionally, the platform enables employees to receive SMS notifications when they receive a toast, allowing them to view the content of the message on the website. This integration of physical and digital touchpoints creates an omnichannel experience, seamlessly bridging the gap between the offline and online worlds.
How we built it
Toasters was built using a combination of React for the frontend, Express for the backend, and MongoDB for the database. JavaScript was used throughout the development process to implement various features and functionalities. Additionally, Twilio was integrated to enable SMS notifications for employees when they receive a toast. The website was designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, providing a seamless experience for both customers and employees.
Challenges we ran into
Our primary challenge centered on crafting an idea that promotes wellness and ensures an omnichannel experience, seamlessly blending physical and digital touchpoints while fostering community within the Arc'teryx brand. Additionally, time constraints posed difficulties in balancing backend development with front-end design, requiring careful planning to create a visually appealing and user-friendly platform. Despite these challenges, our commitment to delivering a solution that meets the needs of customers and employees remained steadfast.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of achieving several key milestones with Toasters. Foremost, conceptualizing and implementing a platform that encourages wellness and ensures an omnichannel experience has been an accomplishment for us. Overcoming time constraints to deliver a visually appealing and user-friendly front-end interface also demonstrates our team's dedication and expertise. Additionally, receiving positive feedback from customers and employees highlights the value of Toasters in fostering community and appreciation within the Arc'teryx brand, motivating us to continue enhancing the platform's impact in the outdoor community.
What we learned
During the development of Toasters, we gained insights into building user-friendly web applications that effectively implement our idea. Understanding user experience design and adapting to changing project needs while managing time constraints were crucial lessons. Additionally, providing and receiving constructive feedback allowed us to iterate and improve the platform iteratively, ensuring it aligns with the theme and ideas.
What's next for Toasters
One area of focus is refining the platform's features based on user feedback and insights, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience for both customers and employees. Additionally, we aim to explore opportunities for deeper integration with Arc'teryx's retail stores, leveraging technology to enhance the in-store experience and encourage greater community engagement. Furthermore, we plan to continue iterating on the platform to introduce new functionalities that support our mission of promoting wellness and appreciation within the Arc'teryx community.
