Inspiration

We were inspired to create TimeWise through our own personal experiences juggling academics, jobs, extracurricular activities, and other responsibilities. Time management is a skill that is used daily by almost everyone, and poor time management can lead to increased stress and anxiety, decreased productivity, mental health issues, and deteriorating physical health. When we noticed that these negative effects were extremely common -- not just in students, but everyone of all ages and occupations -- we were motivated to create an app that could tackle the root cause of poor time management.

What it does

Our app is an all-encompassing study and wellness app that aims to target the issue of time management from a broad perspective. The main features of our app include a to-do list, a calendar where users can add events, a customizable Pomodoro Timer, and a database of study resources. Many of these tools are available in separate apps, but our app consolidates these features into a comprehensive app. Additionally, our app isn't limited to time management and studying tools; for example, our unwind page, which features a custom breathing animation, encourages users to prioritize their mental wellness.

How we built it

Our app is built in Android Studio using Java. We utilize systems such as Google Firebase for user authentication and registration and an SQLite database to support our to-do list function. Our UI -- the backgrounds, images, buttons, and video -- was custom-made by our lead designer.

Challenges we ran into

One main issue we had as a team was being able to meet consistently. Our team is unique as we are part of a statewide virtual coding club and from different areas of the state, which prevented us from ever meeting in person. Initially, this made it difficult to get things done, coordinate meeting times, communicate, and make decisions. However, we overcame it by making sure we delegated tasks and set deadlines.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of overcoming our initial challenges and combining our different areas of expertise to create an amazing app!

What we learned

Overall, we gained technical expertise in different areas of the app -- back-end development, UI design, and research -- and developed valuable communication, leadership, and troubleshooting skills. Additionally, we learned the importance of pushing forward and never giving up, even when the end goal seems impossible.

What's next for TimeWise

We plan to continue developing this app past this competition by adding more tools! These include improved calendar functionality and different tools related to other study methods outside of the Pomodoro Method. Additionally, we wish to improve the user experience by adding customizable profiles, settings, and a point system to reinforce positive habits!
