Inspiration

TickTalk was inspired by the need to address the prevalent issue of being chronically online, mindless online browsing and the desire to be more mindful with how we spend our time online, to promote more meaningful engagement with digital content. For example, some of our team members that are currently about to graduate from university spend a lot of time doom-scrolling whenever they are on social media, for various different reasons. Sometimes we want to just kill some time online, but then we get sucked into a rabbit hole of useless information, propaganda or fake news. Other times, we just want to find some information about the state of the IT field and potential jobs in the future, but then we go down another rabbit hole about news headlines of mass layoffs in IT companies, etc. We recognise the potential of leveraging technology to get our users to make the most out of their online time while fostering a culture of continuous learning and personal growth.

What it does

TickTalk is a platform prototype that aims to revolutionise the way people engage with online content. It serves as a media sharing site dedicated to short-form content, offering users a curated selection of bite-sized pieces of information across a wide range of topics. From quick videos to engaging articles and insightful infographics, TickTalk provides users with valuable insights that they can easily digest whenever they're online. By offering easily digestible content, TickTalk also encourages users to spend their online time more intentionally, making each visit purposeful and efficient.

How we built it

We built TickTalk through Figma, using various other websites such as Youtube, TikTok, Nebula Streaming, TED Ed, Instagram and LinkedIn as references. Our team looked through all the different functionalities of other social media sites to see which functionalities were their strongest features, and implemented functions to filter through and search for the information they want. Our designers also worked hard to create a platform that prioritises ease of use and accessibility through an easy to navigate UI system, so the time our user's spend on our website is optimised for maximum learning efficiency instead of scrolling through endless pages in order to find what they are looking for.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the development process, we encountered various challenges, from figuring out what categories of information people would want to most on our site, to optimising the user interface for maximum engagement. Additionally, balancing the need for comprehensive content with the goal of providing bite-sized information posed its own set of challenges. However, through perseverance, creativity, and collaboration, we overcame these obstacles and built a prototype that we're truly proud of.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have created a platform that not only addresses a pressing need in today's digital landscape but also empowers users to take control of their online experience in a meaningful way. This is especially important now, in a day and age where rage-bait headlines, shock factor news stories and doom scrolling can make people few digitally overloaded, overstimulating our brains and making us unable to process what we are even scrolling through. We wanted to stimulate our user's brains in a good way, giving them their dopamine hit in healthy doses through fun and engaging learning materials, making them feel like they are using every minute productively on the site we created.

What we learned

We've learned the importance of empathy in design, the power of collaboration in problem-solving, and the potential to fight fire with fire by using useful technology to counteract the bad side effects of other technologies. Additionally, we've gained valuable insights into user behavior and preferences, helping us with our future development efforts.

What's next for TickTalk

Looking ahead, we're excited to continue refining and expanding TickTalk, incorporating user feedback and exploring new ways to enhance the platform's features and functionalities. Our goal is to establish TickTalk as the go-to destination for mindful online learning, inspiring users to embrace curiosity, cultivate knowledge, and make every moment count.
