One day my partner and I were listening to old songs while trying to come up with a Hackathon ideas, and then it struck us! We could make a website where people could relive experiences from the past such as songs, movies and TV shows from that time; by simply giving us some information about themselves.
We created this website by asking the user to give us some simple information about themselves such as their age, the genre they want to view (TV shows, music or movies), their country of origin, and what time period they want to view (Example: The 70's, 80's 90's or the 00's). With this information we used API's to fetch data such as images to show the user and let them reminisce about it. From the programming point of view, for the front-end the languages we used consisted of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. For the back-end we used jQuery, AJAX, Javascript, JSON.
The challenges that we ran into for this Hackathon was the fact that neither of us have ever used jQuery, AJAX, JSON, and API's before. The API's were the hardest part for us and it took us a while to understand how it works.
The accomplishments that we are very proud of was with a little help with the mentors at Tech Retreat we learned a whole lot of things about how API's work, what you need to do to be able to run them and actually being able to output information stored in the API's.
The next steps for Throwback Hack are to import Videos, Sounds/Music, and TV Show Clips. Also if this is a success we plan to design an app for both iPhones and Android devices.
