Inspiration

Themis was born out of the idea of equity in education and training for some of the highest-paying jobs. While there are medical VR tools, there are minimal tools specifically for law.

What it does

Themis is a revolutionary VR game that provides a realistic and interactive environment for lawyer trainees, seasoned litigators, law practices, and judicial auditors to practice presenting their cases and assessing their biases.

Themis features randomly generated avatar appearances and personalities that react to the trainee's body language, vocabulary, and tone of voice in real-time using AI feedback loops. This innovative game incorporates the principles of trial science and provides practical experience in a controlled environment. With its unique opportunities and advantages, Themis enhances access to practical law training, improves the justice system's effectiveness and efficiency, and promotes equity of access to justice. Not to mention how commercially viable it is.

How we built it

This Minimum Viable Product was developed with AI-generated content to optimize workflow and reduce the time taken to set up the experience visuals. For instance, the loading screen animation was assembled through a ChatGPT-generated script for Blender. Next, the main courtroom environment was inspired by AI-generated scenes on Blockade Labs. They were however modeled and stitched into a 360˚ panorama using both Blender and Photoshop.

Illustrative avatars were generated using Ready Player Me, though their character traits and appearances will eventually need to be randomly generated during the real VR experience of Themis. Given more time, an AI tool could be added to provide real-time feedback on individual character reactions to the presenter’s linguistics, eye tracking (body language), and speech recognition (tone of voice).

Lastly, the menu bars and feedback cards were automatically generated by uploading my hand-drawn wireframes into UIzard. The demo screens were then assembled on Figma.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge, which resulted in a crippling delay before beginning the project, was centered around downloading and initiating the Unity software and loading all the AI-generated content given the slow wifi and capabilities on my hardware/ adaptability of software to a Mac.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Themis is visually stunning, conceptually comprehensive, and commercially feasible for a VR project created within 24 hours. Meanwhile, the backend development will be sophisticated in its straightforwardness and simplicity. Using AI tools, creating scripts for personality/demographic/appearance randomizers and speech/eye-tracking recognition is not too big of a feat.

What we learned

With ultimately limited knowledge of AI, I was able to learn the basic C# scripting, scene setup, and workflow of creating a VR game within mere hours.

What's next for THEMIS

Themis essentially trains lawyers in the art and science of persuasion in the courtroom, but its beauty lies in its scalability to different professions and fields.

It can go from training lawyers on how to present their case in court, to training psychologists on how to better analyze their patients, training doctors with their bedside manner, training actors to portray more convincing characters, and so on. Public speaking, debate, acting, and professional behavioral analysis are all examples of extensions to this VR experience.
