This game is inspired from the ups and downs college students face at Rutgers. The main goal of this game is to go through a relatable journey from New Student Orientation till Graduation and what it means to be a Scarlet Knight. This is a fun version of the Student Orientation where students get to learn about various helpful resources, such as Handshake, Rutgers Course Sniper, getInvolved for Rutgers, etc.
This is a two player game where both the players start at the New Student Orientation Building and the players end at Graduation. The tile map for this game is composed of mainly three paths, which pass through Busch, Livingston, College Ave and Cook/Douglass campuses. The players roll a dice to move forward. There are 3 types of tiles - Red, Black and White. Landing on Black tiles leads to positive consequences. These include various events such as acing your exam, getting an internship, and being part of a Rutgers intramural team. These events add points to your score. However, landing on the Red tile leads to negative consequences such as missing classes, not getting an SPN for a class delaying graduation, getting a parking ticket, or even going through a break up! These events subtract points from your score. (Note- We have included various resources, as mentioned earlier to help out students related to the prompt). The white tiles represent a "Safe Space" tile. This tile helps students to recover from burnout. When you land on these tiles, you neither gain nor lose points. Thus, even though you miss out on the positive experiences, you do not have to deal with the negative experiences. When you reach graduation, if your score is more than 120 points (this is also the number of credits required to graduate for most majors), then you win the game! If not, then RUscrew-ed.
We built this game utilizing Unity, a 2D and 3D development software. The main language used for this project was C#. The board background was handmade using Procreate.
The main challenges we ran into were learning Unity and C# along with Vscode, which are very new to us, however we wanted to challenge ourselves. The Unity software kept crashing multiple times which slowed down the progress. We also ran into certain formatting errors.
The main accomplishments were that we are proud of is that we were able to represent all the Rutgers campuses on the board. We are also proud that we were starting to get the hold of a completely new software within 24 hours. Finally, I think this game is very relatable to new as well as current Scarlet Knights.
In this project, we learned how to combine coding along with the visual aspects provided by Unity. We utilized the fundamentals of UI/UX designing. We also learned a new language - C#.
We would like to incorporate the score system and make the game a little more challenging by adding a scenario where if the players land on the red tiles, they have to move back a few tiles. If we get the opportunity, we would like to develop this game further, with more time, and we believe that this game can be provided in the New Student Orientation Modules.
