Inspiration
We were so moved by Ulrich's passion for Nalam and their story. When we heard how much time was being spent on admin tasks we saw that time could be better utilized telling their story to reach more donors and help more girls.
What it does
- Made changes to the website to focus on telling the story of Nalam and the girls it is helping.
- mock up of changes made in Figma -fixed header/nav bar to keep Donate button always on screen -changed hierarchy of information to better convey story of who Nalam is, why they do it and the impact they provide. -highlight various donation packages
- create email automation -as soon as a payment is successful email is sent to donor -email includes personalized story if appropriate donation level is met -automatically generates and includes appropriate 501(c)(3) tax forms for all donation levels
How we built it
We used Figma to mock up what the frontend would look like We used Django to create backend portal We implemented sendgrip for email sending leveraged Djangos admin pannel to streamling admin workflow used stripe webhooks to listen to events to trigger email
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was running out of time to implement all the ideas we had. Getting all the third party vendor APIs to work took a lot of time which was difficult given the time constraints. Scheduling conflicts with NGO delayed starting the development process.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting emails to send automatically which will significantly reduce admin workload for Nalam. We are also very proud that this solution is scalable. We are proud that we created easily accessible transaction history. We are proud of the story we were able to help tell by restructuring the website resulting in more girls receiving help.
What we learned
How crucial planning is but also how important it is to get started on development. We gained a lot of experience communicating cross departmentally: being able to convey expectations between design and engineering was a challenge that we enjoyed rising to meet. We FLEARNed a lot about the workflow of a hackathon - none of us have ever done one, so it was a treat getting to experience the pressure, planning, and delegation of this
What's next for The Kitty Scripters
Right now the main accomplishment is generating the emails. However, there is more room for automation. We ran out of time to create a PDF writer if we had more time the 501(c)(3) tax form would be dynamically created based on donations. We also would set up automatic semi-annual emails for updates to be sent to the donors of the girls they are sponsoring. For us - we've all connected on linkedIn and hope to team up in future Hackathons!
