Inspiration
Ducks are cool--and it's the VandyHacks mascot. What better animal could we have chosen for an animal buddy? We also drew inspiration from the Social Good theme--how could we combine ducks and mental health??
What it does
Our duck generates a random message every time the user clicks on it. Hopefully, it'll make someone's day a little brighter :)
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JS to design it.
Challenges we ran into
Some of us had not worked with website design in years, so re-learning three languages was a challenge. We also tried to use JQuery to incorporate the random message functionality, but were unable to successfully import the library in time. Later on we tried implementing a speech bubble to overlay the message; however, there were many problems with the position attribute and using the div's, so we decided to just change the location of the text and get rid of the speech bubble.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Though we hadn't worked with web dev in a while, we created an entire design from scratch--we're very proud of that! We also changed projects Saturday evening, because we realized our original project (involving Unity and external databases) would be too steep of a learning curve for 24 hours.
What we learned
- How to use HTML, CSS, and JS to design a website
- JQuery basics
What's next for the duck project
In the future, we hope to turn this duck into an interactive buddy that can stay with you regardless of which tab you're on.
