Inspiration

The Cozy Space aims to capture space's irresistible, unknown aspect and combine it with a familiar feeling of comfort in one's home. One day, if mankind decides to branch off into space to unfamiliar planets, the essence of a home will still remain important no matter where you go. Hence, the Cozy Space was designed to mimic what life on Mars could look like while also having elements reminiscent of life on Earth.

What it does

In the Cozy Space, players are commanders of their own Mars base, where they are tasked with an important mission to create the best Earthen specimen possible that can grow on Mars soil. Players are able to interact with the environment around them, collecting soil, entering different rooms such as the greenhouse and lab, and analyzing their samples and specimens to produce the best possible results.

How we built it

The game is primarily coded in Python and uses Tkinter for all of its UI. All of the graphics were hand-drawn.

Challenges we ran into

Some technical challenges we ran into while creating the Cozy Space were typically centered around trying to add interactiveness to the graphics. Making the character move around the room and have them interact with the numerous elements in each room was a bit challenging to navigate.

A non-technical challenge we ran into while creating the game was prioritizing certain parts of the game over others. Basic functionality came first, but sometimes our team got caught up in trying to make the fine details that would make the game "pop."

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is the first time we tried to create a game together as a team, so we are very proud of all the coding and graphical progress we made during the past few hours. We've been fortunate enough to work together during previous hackathons, so we definitely saw a significant improvement in how we function as a team and delegate tasks.

What we learned

Basic functionality should come before finer details! Though it seems obvious, we were so excited to add features to the game that would make it shine that we lost some time in getting the basic elements of the game working.

What's next for The Cozy Space

We would love to expand on the idea by making more interactive elements, such as a part of the game that details the launch to landing. There are so many elements of space travel and space exploration that the Cozy Space can build upon to further unravel the mysteries of space by making it seem like an extension of our home :).
