Inspiration

We found inspiration for our concept from the game “Among Us” and social media giants. We strive to provide a safe place where students can learn about the internet and how to protect their data privacy.

What it does

The goal of our project is to provide children with interactive learning on data privacy online. We chose to focus on this demographic because as younger generations are born and raised in the social media revolution, it is important for them to be aware of the privacy breaches and data collection that happens on social platforms.

How we built it

Our prototype was made on Photoshop and Figma. We find this was the most efficient and user friendly way to work in teams whilst in different locations.

Challenges we ran into

Doing background research about privacy regulations, as well as having teammates in different parts of the world made the meeting times and work periods more challenging than usual.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

After doing thorough research and consulting with our mentors our final prototype is something that we are very proud of. We polished our design after going through different stages of prototyping, starting from low fidelity hand-drawn wireframes to a high fidelity MVP which is optimal for the users.

What we learned

This design challenge has given us the opportunity to go more in depth on how to incorporate responsible data collection into our interface. We believe that users have a right to their data being kept private and this project is a step in that direction. We polished our skills in different types of prototyping, as well as had a chance to collaborate with people in different time zones and produce an MVP within a short period of time.

What's next for The Big Other

In the future we will like to add more levels and difficulties to the game. It would be ideal to touch on more topics so that the user is well informed with all aspects of data privacy. Beyond this hackathon we would also love to continue to work on our idea and pitch it for elementary and middle school education in Canada and internationally. From a young age children in Canada are introduced to their rights. The right to online privacy is something missing in the curriculum, and it should not be any less important than the rest.
