Inspiration

The inspiration behind GreenCart was to create an application that helps people make more sustainable choices while shopping. With the increasing awareness of climate change and the impact of human activities on the environment, there is a growing need to encourage sustainable practices in our daily lives. GreenCart aims to address this by providing users with information on the carbon emissions of products they purchase, allowing them to make more informed, sustainable choices.

What it does

GreenCart is a shopping assistant application that helps users shop more sustainably. It uses the DitchCarbon API to calculate the carbon emissions of products and provides users with information on the products' carbon footprint. Users can set a carbon budget for themselves and the app suggests products that fit within that budget. Users can also compare products based on their carbon emissions and other factors such as price, quality, and brand. Additionally, GreenCart provides incentives such as discounts or loyalty points to nudge users towards more sustainable choices.

How we built it

GreenCart was built using React Native for the front-end and Firebase for the back-end. The DitchCarbon API was integrated into the app to calculate the carbon emissions of products. The app also uses barcode scanning technology to provide users with product information. We used agile development methodologies and collaborated using tools such as Trello, Slack, and GitHub.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating an app that has the potential to make a positive impact on the environment by encouraging sustainable shopping practices. We're also proud of the intuitive user interface and the seamless integration of the DitchCarbon API into the app.

What we learned

During the development of GreenCart, we learned a lot about integrating APIs into applications and working with barcode scanning technology. We also gained insights into the importance of creating a user-friendly interface and the value of collaboration in agile development methodologies.

What's next for GreenCart

In the future, we plan to expand the app's functionality by integrating with more shopping platforms and partnering with retailers to provide more incentives for sustainable choices. We also plan to incorporate additional features such as personalised carbon footprint tracking and community engagement tools to create a more holistic shopping experience.
