Inspiration
As cities continue to grow and develop, we're witnessing a critical environmental challenge: the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Urban areas are becoming significantly hotter than their surrounding rural regions due to heat-absorbing materials like concrete and asphalt, lack of vegetation, and reduced air circulation. This isn't just an environmental issue—it's a public health crisis that increases energy consumption, worsens air quality, and puts vulnerable populations at risk of heat-related illnesses. We were inspired to create Terra Scope after seeing how many cities struggle with sustainable urban planning. Traditional approaches often lack the data-driven insights needed to predict and mitigate environmental impacts before construction begins. We wanted to bridge this gap by combining cutting-edge satellite imagery, AI-powered predictions, and comprehensive environmental data to help cities make informed decisions about their development.
How we built it
Frontend: • Next.js 15, React 19, TypeScript • Mapbox GL JS with 3D terrain rendering • Tailwind CSS and Radix UI for responsive design • Custom React hooks for state management
Backend & Integration: • Custom API service layer for environmental data processing • Integration with satellite data providers and environmental APIs • TypeScript and Zod for data validation • Real-time updates and error handling
