Inspiration

We recognized that creating a more sustainable community first begins with education. Upon an initial online search, we discovered that most websites about environmental conservatism were primarily informational, outdated, or lacked opportunities for interaction. We wanted to create a platform that would make taking sustainable action fun and engaging.

What it does

Terra is an innovative and educational way to reduce one’s ecological footprint with the help of a virtual plant companion. Users watch short-form videos on the app, learning about sustainable practices that they can apply in their daily lives. At the same time, users help counteract their impact on the environment by raising money towards eco-friendly charities with each video watched. Plus, the more videos users watch, the more their virtual plant grows. Once users watch enough videos, Terra will plant a tree in the real world!

Challenges we ran into

We originally started with the idea of a tablet app for young children to learn about sustainability through activities. However, after a meeting with one of the mentors, we realized that our idea lacked adequate research and user validation. Back to square one, we conducted interviews with a few friends and family members to learn what really motivates people to learn about sustainability. From our interviews, we decided an educational app targeted towards older teens and young adults would be a more suitable project.

What we learned

The most important thing we learned is that any sound solution must be backed by proper research!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although our project is far from perfect, this was our team’s first designathon and we are proud to take this step forwards in developing our skills.
