Inspiration
The inspiration for Tech Lelum stems from the urgent necessity to address the severe underrepresentation of Indigenous people in the Canadian tech industry. . Our goal was to eliminate the significant barriers Indigenous youth face, leading us to establish Tech Lelum, collaborating with members of the Cowichan Tribe.
What it does
The project's function is centered on providing culturally relevant, story-based programming lessons and connecting youth with Indigenous tech veterans for essential mentorship.
How we built it
We built the platform efficiently, starting with Figma design for visual alignment and moving to Next.js for robust implementation with a Supabase Backend.
Challenges we ran into
Our greatest challenge was the complex alignment of the theme to ensure the content was both technically sound and authentically reflected our and our audience's cultural goals, and git merge conflicts!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite this, we are proud of the resulting platform's potential for high social impact, and in the process, we learned how to code fast and efficiently using Next.js and Supabase.
What we learned
We learned how to work as a team efficiently on a full stack project.
What's next for Tech Lelum
The immediate next step for Tech Lelum is focused on scalability and inclusivity. We plan to make the platform easily expandable and adaptable so it can be utilized by other Indigenous groups and nations. This strategic move ensures the project evolves into a broader, national resource capable of integrating diverse cultural narratives and protocols, ultimately maximizing its reach and impact across Indigenous communities seeking to enter the technology sector.
