Inspiration
The team was worried about social media usage, especially since it is prevalent in our generation. We decided to tackle this field due to our lack of knowledge and awareness of it.
What it does
The policies aims to improve the PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act). Specifically, the proposed policies and technical solution were made to make users more informed of conditions and agreements made with social media services.
How we built it
The policies were brainstormed through team discussion and research over policies targeting surveillance capitalism. The solution was developed in HTML, React, and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
There were issues with the technicals of HTML, Javascript, and CSS. Due to the split-up work, we invested a large portion of time on either the technical solution or the policy hack individually. Nearing the submission, the website was unintentionally deleted, to which an individual scrambled for 30 minutes to retrieve it luckily. Nevertheless, there is an issue with uploading the website, as the relative links do not work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating the proposed policies, creating a chrome extension, and a website that addresses the surveillance capitalism issue.
What we learned
We learned policies surrounding surveillance capitalism, how chrome extensions are built, and the importance of sleep.
